About The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido
This series of 55 landscape paintings on the Tokaido Highway, a trunk road in the Edo period, begins at Nihonbashi in Edo, the starting point, and ends at 53 inns and the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto, the terminus. The series is rich in local color, depicting the ever-changing scenery, the seasons, and the lively activities of the people passing by.

About Utagawa Hiroshige
Utagawa Hiroshige (Kansei 9 - Ansei 5, 1797-1858) was a popular ukiyoe artist at the end of the Edo period who was a leader in landscape painting. His Hoeido version of "Tokaido Gojusantsugi" (Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido Highway), published during the Tempo era, was a huge hit, and he subsequently painted numerous landscapes of the Tokaido Highway. In his last year of life, he created a series of paintings called "Meisho Edo hyakkei (One hundred Famous Views of Edo)," in which he depicted seasonal scenes of Edo with his unique perspective and rich sensibility. This series is also known to have been copied by Van Gogh.
