Ogasawara Gen
Creator of everything from hand-drawn Ukiyo-e reproductions to animation
After working at NHK Design Center as a member of the art team for "Clouds above the Hill" and "Sayonara, Alma",I was in charge of background CG for "Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige", reproducing Utagawa Hiroshige Ukiyo-e prints.
After working on VFX production for the special drama "Makete Katsu" and the historical drama "Yae no Sakura", I became independent.
With drawing, design, and motion graphics in our arsenal
I have participated in a variety of production sites.
I have knowledge of Japanese culture from my involvement in historical dramas such as the historical drama , and I have the technology to complete the process of drawing Ukiyo-e with a brush, coloring it with CG, and making it into motion graphics.
I create many creative works that combine Japanese culture and technology.
Recent results include the following.
Iillustration of a modern interpretation of the picture scroll "Kidai Shoran" depicting the Edo Nihonbashi area, and Motion graphics for Mansai Nomura's stage productions of "Takahime" and "The Ballad of Narayama" (Kyogen).
And I also produced a video for "Sugimoto Bunraku Onnagoroshi Abura no Jigoku" and "Sugamozuka," both directed by Hiroshi Sugimoto.
The"Hachiji Dayo!Zenin Shugo"(Famous popular Japanese TV programs in Showa-era) ,I recreated an art set that strongly resembled the original Japanese landscape of the Showa period, and also created CG layouts.
The scope of my activities is wide-ranging.
Immediately after becoming independent, I had an office on the upper floor of a stable, but in 2021, I started living in Enzan, Yamanashi Prefecture, renovating an old private house and living in two locations with Tokyo.
This house is an old thatched roof used by silkworm farmers, and is very leaning. So I live in the house while repairing it, such as plastering and filling in gaps in the walls.
I feel the interest and potential of the digital art created in an old house surrounded by peach fields, which can be transmitted to the world as NFT.
I hope you will enjoy this series of CG Ukiyo-e works.
